Drafts for tax assessment rolls of real and personal estates in Clinton County (N.Y.), [ca. 1799-1818].

This series consists of drafts of town assessment rolls prepared for county treasurers by tax assessors. The documents in this series were collocated as a manuscript collection and while the records assess personal and real property, the provenance of the series is unknown. Each document provides: name of possessor of real or personal property; description of real estate (acreage, farm, mill, tannery, etc; sometimes left blank); value of real estate; value of personal estate; and total assessed value. The series also includes a printed 1798 set of instructions to assistant assessors from United States Government relating to federal taxes.

The U.S. government levied a direct property tax in 1798. The state collected delinquent taxes for this direct tax. Assessment for the U.S. direct tax was used for the 1799 state tax. The tax-sale of 1808 was conducted for instances of nonpayment of the U.S. direct tax.
